Recto/Verso. L’iconografia cristiana dalle immaginette sacre alla cultura pop contemporanea is a research project that focuses on the production and consumption of devotional images. The work investigates the coexistence of sacred and profane in the fetishes that are now an important part of the christian visual universe — and not only —, and it identifies in the medium of the santino (holy card) the ideal starting point to explore this interesting topic.

The project focuses on the phenomena of appropriation to which religious iconography has been exposed since the 19th century: figurines, tattoos, t-shirts, music albums, memes and religious gadgets are just some of the forms of expression of the contradictory relationship between the sacred and the profane which characterizes our times.

Through an iconographic apparatus that complements the texts in the two sections of which it is composed, the volume traces a historiographic path of the making of the holy cards that progresses in order to embrace the new forms of image veneration in non-religious articles.

Recto/Verso. L’iconografia cristiana dalle immaginette sacre alla cultura pop contemporanea è un progetto di ricerca che indaga la produzione e il consumo delle immagini devozionali. Il lavoro riflette sulla compresenza di sacro e profano nei feticci che oggi abitano l'universo visivo cristiano — e non — individuando nel medium del santino il punto di partenza ideale per esplorare la materia.
La pubblicazione si concentra sui fenomeni di appropriazione ai quali l'iconografia religiosa è stata sottoposta a partire dal XIX secolo: figurine, tatuaggi, t-shirt, album musicali, meme e gadget religiosi sono solo alcune delle coniugazioni del rapporto contraddittorio tra sacro e profano presenti nell'epoca attuale.

Attraverso un apparato iconografico che accompagna i testi nelle due sezioni di cui è composto, il volume traccia un percorso storiografico della fattura delle piccole stampe cristiane che avanza fino ad abbracciare le nuove forme di venerazione dell’immagine in articoli di natura laica.
