Sequential Figure & Ground
Based off the Gestalt principle of figure and ground, the purpose of this assignment was to become familiar with the subtle concept that serves as one of the supporting pillars of graphic design. If a design does not look good in black and white, it won’t look good in color. Figure and ground has a large impact on these minimalistic designs. Therefore, creating intrigue with the simplest of forms has helped me develop this often overlooked principle. In my design I was inspired by the concept of proactive negative space, and how it can create visual ambiguity and confusion. This composition is designed to slow the viewer down and make them question what letterforms they are following without sacrificing visual flow.

As required by the assignment, “Typography” is spelled out from the top down, accompanied by my choice of a secondary word, “Proportion”. Each letter pair rolls into the following pair smoothly because of the seamless connections, and the composition is sturdy and balanced; slightly heavier/blacker at the bottom and lighter/whiter at the top.
