11th CF Student Conference Culminates in Day of Action

Based in Chicago, Illinois, Amy Chan is the founder of Social Catalyst Consulting. Amy Chan has led many civic engagement initiatives during her career, including organizing the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Day of Action hosted by the University of Chicago in 2018. President Bill Clinton launched CGI U in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world. Each year, it challenges students to make Commitments to Action, that is, new, specific, and measurable initiatives that address pressing challenges.

The Day of Action took place on October 21, 2018, as the culmination of the 11th annual CGI U civic leadership conference, which brought together undergraduate and graduate students representing 145 countries and all 50 states to discuss innovative solutions to global challenges in education, peace and human rights, environment and climate change, public health, and poverty alleviation.

Student leaders took part in the Day of Action, where they had the opportunity to work together with local nonprofits. They participated in several community service projects, including the packaging of approximately 77,000 meals for the global nonprofit Rise Against Hunger for shipment to developing countries. They also collaborated on a public art project and helped prepare craft kits for school groups visiting nearby museums.

Megan Strawther, Community Engagement Manager at the Clinton Foundation, wrote, "Amy organized one of the most successful service projects for our program to date, allowing 1,000 CGI U students from around the world the opportunity to work with and learn from the extraordinary nonprofits in the Southside Chicago community.”
