Babushka Postcards
In this project I decided to take an intuitive approach and see where it leads me. The result is a set of 6 postcards, showing the typical life of a babushka from post-Soviet countries.
Getting some fresh air while waiting for her friends — other babushkas, to get fresh gossips.
Walking from the railway station toilet, brining spring vibes with flowery outfits.
Having a cup of tea and biscuits and making sure you leave her full.
Walking at bazar, looking for the best prices. Putting candles for your health.
Sitting in the queue for hours, waiting for the doctor's appointment.
Walking around the streets and thinkings about the Soviet times.

The Process
My process was a long way. To start with, I was a bit homesick and thought a lot about the misery and strength of women from post-Soviet countries, as I was reflecting loads on my relationship with the women of my family. From my memory and for me, elder women in Ukraine are mostly grumpy and unhappy. Of course, nice and warm "babushkas" also were there, but I don't remember them that well.

I felt an urge to sketch them, to analyse and explore their wrinkles and moods, to learn what stands behind that grumpiness and harshness.

After sketching, I wanted to put my babushkas in some kind of environment. I was nostalgically looking through the gallery on my phone, and got an idea of creating digital collages.

As collage is all about moving certain parts and accomplishing a strong composition, I spend a lot of time trying and moving different objects in my layers.

As usual I had a few ideas, which I haven't included, as they looked too different from already created postcards.

And here is a demonstration of my thinking process.

Thank you!
