Week 8: Editorial Design 1 | Choosing & Combining Type

Task 1: Design Critique

How many typefaces were used?

Two typefaces were used

What kind of typefaces are used and how do they relate to each other?

The first typeface used is big and bold and the second is small and thin. The first       typeface is used to brand the product. Big and bold allows for easier reading for users to easily identify what the product is. The second typeface is used for helping explain the bold typefaces. It causes less distractions and provides helpful information. The first typeface is the main and the second one is the support.

How did the designer use space and alignment to organise the text?

As seen on the bottle, the placement of the text is centred and vertically aligned as it is a cylinder tube which makes it more eye catching and simple to read.

What were the treatments used to differentiate text and organise information — size, scale, treatment (colour, effects)?

As there is quite a lot happening on the front of the bottle, the centre text and the main logo is differentiated by a white glow which helps the image and text stand out. It is also the largest text which is helpful for users to easily identify the product making for a quick and easy purchase.

What are the other elements on the label (logos, images, graphics, rules, background colours)

In conjunction with the vertical alignment of the text, different coloured text backgrounds (eg. Red and different shades of green) and a picture representing the fragrance are used to highlight important information and makes it clear to the consumer what they are purchasing. The symmetry between the picture of the lavender and the white background also makes for a clean design.

What is your opinion about the quality of the label? Does it work? Is it aesthetically pleasing? Is it effective? Why do you think that is?

I think this an effective label as it is extremely clear and the symmetry makes it aesthetically pleasing. All the right colours have been used to highlight the important areas and it is a clean and easy to read label.

How does the use of type and its organisation on the label influence the aesthetic quality and efficiency of this label?

The type face is bold and clean with no accents that take away from the product itself.

Task 2: Label Design

2 typefaces and one colour

For the first design, I decided on the usage of the important words being used with bold writing and the sub information as thin writing. This is to enhance the customers eyes when quickly skimming past to find the vital most important information, and if interested, can then read onwards with the thiner text. I also scaled the thinner text smaller to allow for less word junk compacting the space, allowing for easy readability on the important aspects. The structure order is divided into each highlighted category as bold showcases the information, thin describes the information.

1 typeface and one colour
For the second design, I decided on the usage of the important words being sized larger  and the sub information sized smaller. I changed the font to become more simpler and readable both big and small. This is due to the reason of working with only one font and colour. By enlarging the most important information larger, it allows for easier tracking for the human eye so no confusion starts on where certain information is held. I changed the title alignment so the brand stands out more, by enlarging the size equally compared to the first image where the titles text gradually decreases due to two fonts.I also created more space with the thiner text for easier readability as one continuous font can lead the eyes astray if not spaced properly. The structure order is divided into Important info scaled bigger, sub info scaled smaller.

1 typeface only and up to two colours
For the third design, I decided on the usage of the sub text being the colour blue and the titles being the colour dark blue. I changed the font to give a more classy feeling behind it. The sub information in the title is also larger and a different colour, as this highlights what type of cleaning product it is first.I decided to make the sub information a different colour as working with multiple colours, i can freely highlight the importance of both the titles and information at once. I also created more space with the thiner text for easier readability as one continuous font can lead the eyes astray if not spaced properly. The structure order is divided into the titles being larger and highlighted dark blue, sub info smaller but also pops out better with being changed with a different colour of blue.
