[Universal Carabiner]

Tobias Cochran
RISD ID 2021

This universal clip was intended to emulate the effectiveness of carabiners while introducing a fresh visual form. I sought to maintain the aesthetic of industrial and outdoors tech gear. I was also influenced by jewelry aesthetics and sought to balance the plastic 3D printed texture by utilizing the brightness of brass in the rivets holding the clip’s doors into the jaw. I further built upon the contrast of the brass and plastic by building a brass carabiner to complement the brass rivets.
I tested several 3d printers and ultimately settled on printing with the Stratasys printer. The Stratasys printer is best suited for this type of print as the jaw of the clip features large cavities and having being able to dissolve the structural material means that the actual jaw wont be damaged by the process of removing the structural material.
