Imagine a primitive, ritualistic scene- people gathered around a fire, singing, meditating, then drifting into a dream-like state. The flames dance in the mind, entwining with the ghosts of thoughts and memories, bursting forth at times, flickering into the consciousness, then dissolving once again...

Dreamscape is made from felted wool that was carded and dyed by Yuli Somme in Buckfast, Devon. In order to create the ghostly shapes, I laid them onto the background wool before rolling, but did not sew them in place, in order to allow for a chaotic free movement during the felting process. The final felt has then been beaded to draw the eye into certain shapes and allow for space between. Thereafter, the felt has been mounted onto a canvas 62cms width x 77.5cms height.

I like working with tactile media and fabrics- they bring a 3D quality to the work and also add a sprinkle of chaos, because they never behave like a flattened drawing. Because my illustrations are so precise, I really love my fine art to have a hint of chaos about it whenever I can. The light plays on the beads, adding a little zest to an extremely soft, fluffy background.
