Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
For this project, I took "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," by Lewis Carroll and created 10 unique illustrations for it as well as an illustrated cover. I also formatted and exported the book as an EPUB3 for ebook viewing. This was my first time working with EPUB3 formatting and I was able to learn how to successfully format and export an Adobe InDesign document in this form.
Sketches
For this project, I created a total of 110 sketches. I created 10 concepts for each illustration and 10 for the cover. This was very difficult and time-consuming as I had to read and understand each chapter's contents and try to find the best composition for each theme.
Initial Digital Drafts
Once I brought my illustrations into Adobe Illustrator, they went through a variety of alterations. I started with very simple and flat monochromatic drafts. I created one draft for each chapter illustration and 5 drafts for the cover, which are found on the last row.
Illustrative Process
Each illustration was continually being worked on throughout the entirety of this project. They all started out very simply and all had details and subtle texture and shading added to enhance the design. Some went through more dramatic changes, but all ended up at a place where I was pleased with the finished look. Little details are very important to me and even the smallest details are important in the design.
Final Drafts
These illustrations went through about 4 different stages to get to their final rendition. I chose the monochromatic look because the theme of the book heavily centers on how Wonderland is a whimsical, bright, and interesting place as compared to the real world. This is why, in the cover, the outside is a bland tan while the inside of the queen's world is bright blue.
Ebook Formatting
Prior to this project, I did not know what an EPUB was or that exporting anything as an ebook would be so different than exporting for print. After finishing my illustrations, I took the text into Adobe InDesign and included them alongside the full text in order to be able to export. I also included a table on contents after the cover. I had to readjust and export about 5 or 6 times before I was able to format everything how it should look. Troubleshooting was a large part of this assignment, but it was worth it for the fully functioning Epub I had as a result.
