Design approach and philosophy

The design approach has been to develop a building which is inharmony with the natural coastal setting it is in while meeting therequirements of the project.  Architecturalelements are based on natural shapes and organic forms to achieve this withoutlosing the objective of ensuring the form follows desired functionality.

Various cost saving options in the construction phase will beconsidered and applied where appropriate. This includes insulated concrete forms (lightweight forms that arefilled on site) saving construction time, shipping times and waste.

Green design concepts are implemented to their full extent inkeeping with the natural philosophy of the project while at the same time cutenergy costs.  Light-weightsolar-electric cell foil can be cut to shape and form allow for a curved roofwith solar energy generation.  Rain waterharvest systems, LED lighting, insulation, and key design elements of thebuilding result in significant energy efficiencies.

Cooling design features consist of a multi-faceted approachthrough prevention, ventilation techniques, supplementary air conditioning powersourced through solar power generation. Preventive measures include roof design, tinted glazing and insulation, while ventilation strategies focus on landscape manipulation and use ofpredictive air flow concepts.  Additionalprovision of a standard air conditioning unit ensure no reliance is place onone method.

Concrete will form the principle building material although eco-masonrywill be used where possible and where a significant cost/environmental benefitis realizable.  Wood will be used towhere clear constructional benefits are evident as well as continuing thenatural design philosophy.
