Rhythm Posters - Remake #1

Remake #1

Brief: Remake one of your pieces 3 times with 3 different obstructions.

Obstruction #1: physicality.
Project brief: create a series of 4 abstract landscape 'posters' that create a sense of rhythm.

This is my origin piece. I chose to work with these posters because they felt original and nice despite being simple. I think they are an interesting outcome based on the project brief.

I always start my creative work by looking at the brief and the formalities. For this assignment we ought to create 4 posters that would work in the same universe without being identical.

I started researching again how to get rhythm into a still design. I think this is an interesting perspective since you don't normally work with sound when making posters. I think about my obstruction next - physicality. Physicality is the feeling of something real, the feeling of holding something or that something has texture.
That instantly makes me think of 3D modelling which send shivers down my spine because that's definitely my weak point.

So how exactly do I get around to make something mixing physicality and rhythm? Let's brainstorm!

It hits me that neither rhythm nor physicality has anything to do with color. Therefore, keeping the design black&white should enhance the contrast as much as possible and remove the unnecessary distraction that is color. Music can be visualised using color, but when I think about rhythm what springs to mind is repetition and geometric shapes.

I start exploring different design and pattern to see if anything sticks. A rule for me and my creative work is that I should rather just start creating something than researching endlessly.

I am inspired be the great work of Josef Albers and Josef Müller Brockmann and attempt to make something in that kind of style. After having made some 15 compositions it strikes me that one of them vaguely looks like a piano. I look back at my mindmaps and yes! Instruments is written on the board with rhythm - and it could fit under physicality as well. I decide to go for a bike ride and sleep on it to come up with more ideas.

Having slept I think it is a good idea to do this - so I start making 3 more posters that each resemble an instrument in an abstract way.

These are the final posters. I added a bit of typography since I thought it would frame them nicely.

Can you guess the 4 instruments?
