210321 Welcome to Amerika

Welcome to
Amerika is a tiny village in the heart of Saxony, Germany, about 100 kilometres west of Dresden. It is situated on the river Zwickauer Mulde that forms a deep valley. That's why the place could only be reached by hopping over stones until the mid 18th century, later only by a small boat. Early settlers and workers found that getting to the other side of the river was as difficult as travelling to America. Therefore they called the village Amerika.
The locally famous Amerika train station was in operation from the 1870s until 2002 when a flood of the river Zwickauer Mulde caused the closing of the railway line Muldentalbahn. The train station took part in the german movie Amerika (1995).
Living in Amerika seems to be quite relaxed. There are farmers who still use tractors built in the 1960s (see picture left above). A flag above the place-name sign Amerika should make Americans proud of Amerika. :-) The water of the river Zwickauer Mulde is used for some small industry companies (picture right above).
In walking distance are some nice places to visit like the small lake Höllteich (see picture left above) where you can rent rowboats and have lunch in a restaurant. Rochsburg castle (picture right above) is a beautiful restaurated castle from the late 12th century with a nice museum about history and local industry.
