School project "URA4"

Urban sweeper for underdeveloped countries
Design for affordable manufacture, maintainance and repair
This is a two phase project, investigating needs and developing alternatives for sweeping public land in Dominican Republic.

The cleaning of the public areas in the capital by the city hall employees is always achieved poorly. The sweepers are transported in the back of a truck to the designated areas to manually sweep and trim sidewalks, roads and highways. At the time of this investigation the teams did not have route strategies diagrammed, staff interviewed said that the main streets usually had a fixed brigade. The effectiveness of this brigades was measured by the amount of bags filled. In the capital, one sweeper would fill 4.45 bags a day, and in certain city zones only 2.01 bags per day, while the ideal was for them to be able to fill up 7 to 9 bags by journey daily. The brigade teams average 49 years of age, and females make 60% of them. Setting 5 goals as a team with Gilda Echavarria, Lucien Cruceta and Berenice Brito, we submitted proposals to our school and won financing to develop full scale functional prototypes.
