After analysing several objects, researching on each one's controversy, we decided to focus on the U-Straw, since it's controversy was very appealing and stood up to us, which is the fact that the U-Straw can be used as a medical necessity: plastic straws are essential for those who are bedridden or have unstable motor skills, because the bendable function facilitates the act of drinking without spilling and, besides that, its disposability is key for sanitary reasons.
This controversy served us as an entry into the healthcare industry.
To begin, we would like to share the element that ties up our project, which comes from the notion of the “average” or “normal” user. We believe that the existence of an “average” or “normal” person is a myth that is deeply ingrained in our society, and in design, we see how problematic this is over and over again.
Today, the 21st-century challenge has become to design for everyone.
Us, as customers, experiencing the world in such different ways has led the shift from mass production to mass customization and personalization, with the goal of attaining objects that are perfectly attuned to our wants and needs.
It is evident that one size does not fit all which is why we believe objects should be manufactured to be simple, sustainable and adaptable in terms of components, fabrication and materiality. Therefore, we believe the future of objects is one based on modularity, comfortability and versatility.
And it is here where RAVIPAD comes into the picture.
