Challenges & Solutions
Although confidence and planning was strong in the pre-production phases of this project, nevertheless there were challenges that arose during the production phase because unexpected obstacles are somewhat inevitable especially in this industry. The general approach of the project involved beverage photography. In anticipation, all of the subject material was collected immediately before the photo shoots. Time was of the essence during production when working with melting ice and ever degrading beverage appeal. The lighting set-ups and surfaces to be used were pre-planned but it was the arrangement of foliage and real fruit that was on-the-fly. The production required a production assistant to retrieve these items as I set up in the studio. I also required assistance with a secondary strobe to introduce some rim lighting to the composition.
As debated in an earlier class discussion, it was my personal choice to use real food and real beverages in these photography shoots. Because the intention of these images were to be used as advertising materials for the client Starbucks, I needed to stay true to the real product. The beverages in the glasses are indeed the real refreshers ordered straight from Starbucks. The assortment of fruit was real with intentionally cut kiwis and strawberries. The floral arrangement was, however, fake. The limited shelf life of appeal for floral arrangements would not suffice for this project. The arrangement was then placed on a reflective, black plexiglass to give the whole composition a compelling canvas.
