Bird Bath - Rotational Moulded, Modular Design

This project is something I worked on in my second year of my Bachelor of Design course for my Digital Modelling for Manufacturing class. This was a highly educational and useful class.

We were taught about a specific production method used in the design industry, for this project it was Rotational Moulding. Rotomoulding is where a large quantity or small plastic pellets are poured into a large mould, which is then heated and turned 360 degrees to spread the melted plastic around the shape.

This production method is ideally suited for large plastic products such a s water tanks or kayaks. For my project, I decided to design a modular birdbath. Each platform is shaped with a conical insert to allow multiple to be stacked withing each other. This gives the user a lot of versatility with the look of their birdbath, which is quite unique. The base pillar of the bird bath can also be filled with water to keep it securely stable.

The process of rotational moulding was key in the design process. I had to take into account the use of a two part mould, desiging each piece with 'draft' to allow it to slide out of the mould with ease. displayed below by the green and red draft images.

It was a class I truly enjoyed as it gave me a glimpse into an actual practical, industry environment.
