A set of four letterform illustrations for the uppercase Q of Bell MT Regular,
each inspired by and named after a particular film or television series.
Bell MT is a serif typeface and it is a modern metal version of the original Bell
typeface. Monotype's hot metal Bell series from 1931 was based on original types
made by the punchcutter Richard Austin for the foundry of John Bell in the 1780's.

WENDIGO
This illustration is inspired by the American psychological horror series "Hannibal" directed by
Bryan Fuller. Named after a mythological beast associated with hunger and cannibalism, it
focuses on the morbid symbolism of the series, the elements in this reflect the disturbed psyche
of one of the protagonists.

CHIHIRO
This illustration is inspired by Studio Ghibli's animated feature film "Spirited Away", directed by Hayao
Miyazaki. Named after the protagonist, Chihiro, who suddenly finds herself in the Spirit World, the
elements shown here include a Japanese bathhouse or onsen, featured prominently in the film
and a mystical dragon, which plays an important role in the development of Chihiro's character.

JIGOKU SHOJO
This illustration is inspired by Hiroshi Watanabe's anime series "Jigoku Shojo", also known as "Hell Girl".
The series focuses on the existence of a supernatural system that allows people to take vengeance by sending the ones who have hurt them to Hell via the services of the mysterious titular Hell Girl and her assistants. Revenge, injustice, hatred and the nature of human themes throughout the series, reflected through the stained, interlocked, grasping hands that represent the teeming desperation of humanity.

SAYURI
This illustration is inspired by Arthur Golden's novel "Memoirs Of A Geisha", published in 1997, and also by the 2005 film of the same name directed by Rob Marshall. The book and the film both portray the story of a young Japanese girl, Chiyo Sakamoto, who is sold by her impoverished family to a geisha house (okiya) to support them by training as and eventually becoming the geisha Sayuri. The themes centre around the sacrifices and hardship faced by pre-WW2 geisha, and the challenges posed by the war and a modernizing world to geisha society. This illustration focuses on the unknown life of the geisha in pre-WW2 Japan, which was then a wonderland in its own way
