A series of photographs documenting the production of minyak nilam (patchouli oil) by family in a small village on Simeulue Island, Indonesia.
One family producing Nilam (Patchouli) Oil in Latiung Baru
In Latiung Baru, a village on Simeulue Island (off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia) where residents from a coastal village Latiung Lama were relocated by the government after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, I visited Riis and his family. In this hut in Latiung Baru, they make minyak nilam — patchouli oil.
