Sally Ride was the first American woman in space. Ride was a major driving force in motivating young women to pursue science, and she devoted the final years of her career to the cause.
Valentina Tereshkova was first and the youngest woman in space. At just 26 years old, she piloted the Vostok 6 spacecraft around Earth alone, orbiting our planet for 48 hours.
