Colour Field Photographs

I had my last group crit for the year today and this was my installation.

Initially I had been preparing a completely different body of work consisting of cut out templates abstracting images I had taken of the human form which I will post after this one.

But on Monday I decided it was time to develop the roll of film I'd had sitting in my Holga for a good two years or so. I didn't even look at the film type and took it straight to the processor, when I pulled my negs out they were blue! It turned out I'd cross processed them. This combined with light leaks and double exposures made for a very intriguing roll of film.

It has always been a goal of mine to create photographs that draw you in and let you get lost in their abstract nature much like the Colour Field Abstract Expressionists. I am heavily inspired by Mark Rothko so it was the greatest compliment to have my work compared to his today.

I made this images in the colour darkroom yesterday, they are about 80cm x 80cm however I plan to make them even bigger and use larger portions of the roll to create a banner-like print and use my darkroom knowledge to abstract them even further.

Would love to hear what you think.
