VanCougar Newspaper circa 2011

I led the VanCougar newspaper under a redesign in 2011 that resulted in the newspaper's first award from the Associated Collegiate Press for Best-of-Show, one of ten bi-weekly newspapers selected.
For the center-page spread I shared here I went to a small vintage shop in Portland and found stamps from the countries that the winners of the Travel Cafe went to. Then, I cleaned up those and created this.
While there, I also created a playful spin-off of the WSU mascot that survived long after I worked there. Leaning into the name of the newspaper, VanCougar, I added a top hat, a monocle, a hint of a tailcoat, and curled the edges of his whiskers like a fine mustache. He was dubbed Count Van Cougar. Understandably and justifiably, he was shut down as a brand-breaking logo variation about five years after he was made. He helped sell shirts and get new recruits while he was with us!
