Skateboard Graphic Design Project

Skateboard Project
Objective: For this project, we were given two skateboards to design and represent the theme of contrast. This could be a thematic contrast or a visual contrast. In the end, I chose a visual contrast to display this theme.

Inspiration:
Originally, I wanted to do a more colorful, bright and abstract piece of artwork on the skateboards. Although I love the shapes and style, I struggled finding a way to display contrast between the two boards. I also decided I wanted to challenge myself with something more difficult and maybe a little more realistic. I found images off of Pinterest that gave me many different ideas including abstract work, colorful and bright colors, neutral designs, as well as realistic designs.
Sketches
At the beginning of every project we are assigned to create quick sketches in order to brainstorm our ideas. A lot of these became silly sketches as I did not know if I wanted this project to be a more silly and fun project or more serious and meaningful. Some ideas included comparing city life to the country life, different elements of nature, as well as different scenes or activities. I felt a little lost even at the end of these sketches, but I had decided I wanted to go for something a little more realistic and abstract in order to challenge myself.
Tiger Stencil Drawing
In the end, I knew I at least wanted a tiger designed on my skateboard with some flowers from the wild surrounding it. I didn't have a solid plan, but I had a general idea of what I wanted.
I started out by drawing a tiger on Adobe Fresco with my iPad. This drawing would then become my stencil that I would create out of vinyl with the Cricut cutter. These are my final drawings I uploaded and just below them is a video explaining how I transferred this vector drawing onto my skateboard.

Final Product
Here is my final product. This project was probably one of my favorites as my teacher pushed me creatively and gave me the independence to teach myself while also being there if I needed help. From this project I learned how to use a Cricut to create stickers and stencils, how to spray paint, how to use different painting techniques, how to use different Adobe apps, as well as how to use my graphic design skills and apply it to a physical project. In the end, this project didn't end up with a deep meaning behind it, but I believe it does represent the inspiration, imagination, and the growth it has taken me to be able to create art that I intend to reflect truth, beauty, and goodness.
