I redesigned the album cover and created a new music collateral for TRIP, the second studio ALBUM by American singer, Jhené Aiko. This album is an expression of her journey of battling with the death of her brother and drug addiction. It was released on September 22, 2017, by ARTium and Def Jam Recordings. My redesign reinforced layering which is a symbol of the journey through life: the pain and the euphoria.
I immersed myself in her music and explanation of it in order to visually express the blend of her feelings with the feelings I got listening. The album is a complete experience. Each song trails into the next which emphasizes going on a trip. Each song is a moment in her journey but all together, it's a completion of her battle. The music guides you to the short movie that was created for the album through the use of poetry. The short movie allows us to see Jhené Aiko's journey of creating the music for this album. It reveals that it is very poetic and symbolic. Jhené Aiko used layering lyrically and was emphasized visually in order to highlight that life is a trip of many layers.
VINYL JACKET + LABEL
Vinyls are a symbol of classic music and gives another listening experience. Vinyl's allow the experience to also be visual. The vinyl spinning as you listen to the flow of Jhené Aiko's and featured voices highlights the flow of creativity: seemingly nonstop yet timely. I wanted to continue the theme of layering because this visual identity best captures the essence of the album. The primary color is shades of purple because purple is a combination of the calm stability of blue and the fierce energy of red. Purple is being used to symbolize power, ambition, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and spiritualism. The jellyfish represents flowing through life, a trip, while the distortion represents an altered reality, tripping, but gives a calming feeling to remind you, “don’t trip” as in everything is okay. I illustrated a light bulb in order to emphasize idea, wisdom, and creativity. The use of light sources is also to illuminate that there's always brighter days waiting after all the darkness.
This lyric booklet would be packaged inside the vinyl jacket. The purpose is to add another layer of creativity. I strategically chose which aspect of the lyrics to include for each song. The lyrics I chose highlights the essence of each song. This format adds to the listening experience by allowing the album to be poetic. The illustration of the lava lamp is to reiterate flow as well as emphasize a trippy effect. The double line I drew with soft pastels while listening to "Sativa" symbolizes creativity, flow, frequency, duality, and emerging from darkness. It symbolizes what's to come because of what's left behind because of the shadow-like feel. The two differing colors on either side on the inside and outside also symbolizes duality: calm and fierce. The legible typography on top of the layering of images, typography, and distortion represent emerging from chaos. The first image repeats throughout the booklet to represent the seemingly never ending trip. The differing second page throughout the booklet reveals that change does happen. Even though it may be minor, it still has an impact. Every page of the booklet is a visual representation of the feeling I got while listening to each song.
Streaming services are way more modern and accessible. Although vinyls would be the preferred listening experience, it is not ideal for everyone. Here are mock-ups of my redesign on two of the most popular ways to stream music today.
