Soar is a children's book project in progress aiming to inform the public of gender equality and queer issues through the medium of children's fantasy. The book attempts to utilize traditional Vietnamese folkloric elements in both storytelling and illustration to contextualize the social issues it addresses and serves as a metaphor for queer expression, queer discrimination, and deviant community structures. With a wider message of acceptance, inclusivity and kindness, the book is intended to foster an open mind in a younger audience and transform the concept of acceptability in the older generation as well, making the discourse on queerness and LGBTQ+ more accessible overall to the public.
The story is set in a familiar Vietnamese folkloric setting - at the bottom of a well, invoking ignorance, denial and normativity. As the main character, Na, ventures above her well, she is sure to gain a new perspective of her own community, the struggle of others, and a new environment where she can express herself.
