A portrait for someone special...

My two dogs and her cat just lounging around.

A fun piece to create, I tried a few new things, and dragged out some old analog tricks as well. Starting with a pencil sketch, I moved that into Adobe Illustrator and started getting some of the main forms drawn using the pen tool.

I then began blocking-in some of the major light and shadow areas (just as I do in the vehicle renderings), and once I had just the basics, I was off to create textures.

I took snapshots of textures as far removed from hair and skin as possible; tile, granite, the stucco on an outside wall, wax paper, Kosher salt, confectioner's sugar, a shoe... OK, that last one is pretty close, but still.

I then began importing those and playing with scale and shear and manipulating them with just the standard brush tools in Photoshop as I don't ever use any pre-made texture or brush packs anyway...

Fun to do this, as it was off of my usual path. 20x16-inches.
