The term change management refers to methods or techniques for handling modifications or adjustments to normal practices. Businesses often employ change management tools and methods in effect major or even minor changes in their processes. The practice of change management is closely linked to the growth and success of businesses and organizations.

Change management involves both the act of managing change from within an organization and that of managing external change. The former involves adjusting the operation of an organization according to factors that the organization has a reasonable degree of control over, and the latter involves responding to outside factors over which the organization has little or no control.

Change management is also an area of professional practice. There are consultants who serve clients by helping organizations adapt to change. These individuals are often versed in a volume knowledge developed out of academic fields such as business administration, sociology, economics, and psychology.
