Packaging & Form Follows Function

Physical Design

To update the packaging of a small toy car which is normally sold on a blister card, I wanted to create a larger package to emphasize the product more. I also wanted my packaging to function as a carrying case and play mat for the product. I was determined to make the package fold out flat and after seeing a pentagon shaped dieline online, it felt like the perfect shape to fit the car and have no glue points so it would lay flat. The pentagon shape also reminded me of bolts and toolboxes, which fit well with the mechanical theme. The added construction paper on top of the tagboard made the flaps very rigid, keeping the package tightly together when folded in case it’s on the go. This package was designed to be kept, used and to provide protection for the car.

Visual Design

I was inspired by the flames on the car and red visuals to extend that into the packaging. Red and white flames climb up the sides, pointing in the direction of the product name to attract attention to it. The color scheme is very “all-American”, red, white and blue adding to a classic and vintage look which goes well with the race car. I tied in a pop of yellow on the inside as a road center line, rounding out the primary colors which I think also adds to the classic look. I kept the inside simple with painting it matte black but the yellow lines indicate that the design is a road and encourages users to use the product on the actual packaging as a play mat/ track. The colors additionally are a homage to the original Hot Wheels packaging which my original object was packaged in.
