Cover art for a series of fictitious horror novels.
To supplement the design of the novel covers, I created engraved style interior illustrations using Photoshop to manipulate and digitally paint public domain photos.
I have always been a fan of old engraved book illustrations and illustrations that featured intricate cross-hatching, but it is incredibly tedious and time consuming. I wanted to see if I could create a similar effect digitally by taking an image and automating the process. I researched the concept and found several Photoshop actions that achieved a similar result, so I knew it could be done. After a day of experimenting and trying different approaches, I was able to come up with a pretty flexible and effective method that used Photoshop’s smart objects and smart filters.

Shroud, Illustrated Title Page

"Margaret struggled to ignore the cold, dead glare of the skull perched upon the side table."

"The parlor at the end of the hallway was Catherine's refuge from Edward's mercurial temper."

"The apparition stared at Margaret. An unsettling sense of familiarity accompanied it's disquieting gaze."

"Raymond slept fitfully next to Margaret that night, His dreams were filled with ominous, shadowy figures."

"it's just a trick of the light and my imagination, thought Margaret. The past is dead and gone."
