The “Giro d’Italia”, an annual bike tour of Italy, has been part of Italian culture since as far back as 1909. Each year, Italians from all over the country crowd the narrow streets of the characteristic small towns across the country, just to get a glimpse of their favourite riders competing for the coveted “maglia rosa” - a pink t-shirt signalling the winner of the race. Pink has always been connected to the Tour, so much so that the Giro became known as “The Pink Race”. We knew that if we wanted to celebrate the Giro, we had to make pink our statement colour.
With its beginning being not too late after the official foundation of the country, the Giro helped the newly-created citizens of Italy feel connected to each other, after centuries of battles and divisions. The Pink Race also made it possible for the World to really see and discover Italy, one tour stop at a time: each tiny village or ancient Italian city was able to show its exceptional landmarks to other Italians and foreigners alike. And at each stop, another gem: the delicious, countless recipes and typical foods from across the Peninsula.
In this project for famed Italian pasta-maker Giovanni Rana, we celebrate the deep connection between the Giro d’Italia, the Italian cities which host the different stops, and their food specialties.
If you could choose, which tour stop would you try?
