ASTANA ART SHOW
In 2019, the curator of the Astana Art Show festival invited us to participate in public art at the first contact exhibition of young artists.
While we were discussing our project, the capital was renamed from Astana to Nur Sultan, like the name of the first president. It was a year of political and social changes. rallies and protests took place throughout the spring in large cities. Illegal detentions of activists were carried out, opposition movements were formed.
All these processes influenced our work, and were reflected in the general illustration for the mural. The central image is a young girl, with an inscription on her chest - Kazakh valor. Initially the girl's face was covered with a bandama, adding to her protest mood, but later we came to the conviction, that an open, bold face is more suitable for the correct expression of an idea.
Attacking animals, a patriarchal three-headed image on fire, flying arrows are all a direct reference to the events described above. Which contrast with the deliberate festive atmosphere that veils the real situation in the country. Sweets poured from a woman's hands are a reference to the Kazakh tradition - shashu. This ceremony is usually performed during family holidays and celebrations.
