Friends of the Central Library Logo

The Friends of the Central Library (FCL) advocate for patron and library needs, promote literacy initiatives and raise visibility of the Central Library in the community through activities that emphasize the importance of the resources provided by the Central Library in downtown Winston-Salem. Each branch within the Forsyth County public library system has it's own Friends group. FCL was having a difficult time competing with groups from libraries located in more upscale areas. With plans to renovate the Central Library in the works, it was an excellent time to give FCL an upgrade to their fund raising materials and logo.

Being the "literal" people that they are, the FCL Board's only request was that the logo include a book. When it comes to logo design I prefer to reduce the elements down to the bare minimum but with so many words in the name plus the request for a book, the resulting sketches were more complicated than I liked. Hinting at the shape of a book with the type addressed that problem nicely but I also wanted to show the diversity of the population that the Central Library and its Friends group serves. The colorful pages not only represents the people who benefit from the library but also emphasizes the shape of a book.
