BAMBOO TUNNEL - ONSITE CONSTRUCTION

THE IGLOO
After the CYCLONE THANE in Pondicherry, several huge trees were blown over and uprooted in Auroville. These trees had to be cleared for traffic, hence the trees were cut and used for various purposes. In this project, these cut wood were stacked one over another from an octagonal base to form the IGLOO.
Scooter tyre is used inorder to maintain the circular form
BAMBOO TUNNEL
The BAMBOO TUNNEL connecting the Igloo and the Tree deck is made of long bamboo tied together by rings of casuarina at regular intervals. Coir ropes, which is soaked in water, is used to tie the bamboo and casuarina in universal knot. The tunnel passes through the branches of an adjacent tree and is supported on the branch bark ridge of the tree.

THE TREE DECK
The Tree deck is placed between the branches of a tree and is supported in the corners by bamboo columns from the ground. The deck flooring is made of closely placed thin bamboo over a wooden frame and is tied in universal knot. The deck is covered on top using corrugated tetra pack sheets (recycled building material).
