Portrait Series: Familiar Faces

well, to be more specific: familiar faces, defamiliarised.

I asked friends if I could draw them. I asked them what vulnerability means to them.

their answers arrived in varieties of photographs - some closer than others, some with their full selves in large empty rooms.

the arch of my back
my injured nails on dried hands
the mess of my hair in the morning
the double chins
the acne
the framed and angled corners of our naked selves.

this is me, they told me.
I'll draw you, as you are, I told them.
I'll give you yourself, familiar and anew.
I see myself, parts of myself, strangers and my own likeness intertwined. vulnerability is bold, after all.
thank you for trusting me with a part of your truest self, I told them.
