Statement

나는 내가 목격한 수많은 소녀들을 기억하고, 그들이 세상에서 소비되는 방식에 대한 단상을 평면에 구체화시킨다. 소녀(少女, Girl)는 그 자체로 모종의 상징이자 기호로서 널리 대상화되는 공통 감각의 일환으로 대중에게 전시되며, 성적 매력을 풍기면서도 다소곳해야 하는 소녀들의 경계적인 속성은 사람들로 하여금 소녀를 이해하기 힘든 특수한 존재로 변하게 한다. ‘기괴하면서도 사랑스러워’질 수 있게 된 소녀들은 스스로를 왜곡하여 부자연스럽게 만들다 결국 위험에 처하고 만다.

그림 속 위험에 처한 소녀들은 눈을 똑바로 뜨고 캔버스 너머의 관객을, 혹은 그 관객 너머의 무언가를 가만히 응시한다. 소녀들은 그들이 응당 보여줄 법한 상냥함을 최대한 지워내고 환멸, 체념, 무시, 또는 일말의 공격성마저 띈 시선을 보내지만 정적이고 수동적이며 방어적인 자세로 인해 결국 관찰 대상으로 전락한다. 또한 그들이 갇힌 프레임 안을 불규칙하게 채우는 팬시한 색감과 포스터를 연상시키는 텍스트는 소녀들의 딱딱한 몸짓과 대비되며 불편한 모습의 소녀들을 이미지화하는 데 일조한다.

점점 더 많은 소녀들이 붕괴되고 있고, 더 많은 소녀들이 보여지는 것을 거부하며 더 이상 웃어주지 않을 것이다. 무해해지기를 문득 거부하고 맞지 않는 옷을 입은 듯 불편한 감정을 속으로 삼키는 소녀들은 결국 전시장 안에서 하나의 화려하고 복잡하며 미스터리한 이미지로 꾸며진다. 이러지도 저러지도 못 하는 소녀는 매스 미디어를 통해 대중들의 눈 앞에 진열되는 대상 자체이기도 하며 동시에 소녀 규범을 무의식적으로 따르는 나 자신이기도 하다.

소녀들은 사람들에게 현대를 살아가며 여과 없이 섭취하는 이미지 너머에 실재하고 있는 ‘부자연스러운 인간들’인 자신들의 투쟁을 알린다. 그것은 곧 평범을 위한 투쟁이며, 그들이 제일 처음 시작하는 것은 웃지 않는 것이다.

I remember the countless girls I've witnessed, and I draw the way they are consumed in the world. Girls are displayed to the public as part of a common sense that is widely targeted as a symbol and symbol in itself, and the border-ness of girls who are sexually attractive and have to be somewhat cautious at the same time turns them into special beings that are hard to understand. Girls who can be "strange and lovely" distort themselves and make them unnatural, and are eventually in danger.

Girls in the picture who are in danger, stare straight at the audience beyond the canvas, or something beyond the audience. Girls erase as much sweetness as they can show and give disillusionment, resignation, neglect, or even a little aggression, but they eventually fall into observation target due to their static, passive, and defensive positions.

Also, the fancy colors that fill their trapped frames irregularly and the text that reminds commercial posters contrasts with the girls' hard gestures and helps to image uncomfortable-looking girls.

More and more girls are collapsing, and more girls are refusing to be seen and won't laugh anymore. The girls, who refuse to be harmless and swallow uncomfortable feelings as if they were wearing inappropriate clothes, are eventually decorated with one colorful, complex, and mysterious image in the exhibition hall. A girl s the object that is displayed in front of the public through mass media, and at the same time, she is also myself who unconsciously follows the girl's norms.

Girls inform people of their struggles as "unnatural human beings" without filtration. It is a struggle for the common, and the first thing they start with is not to laugh.
