Artist & Artifact: Re|Visioning Brooklyn’s Past has been organized to see how contemporary artists, mostly local and a few based far afield of Brooklyn, would creatively respond to the borough’s rich history. An open call issued by the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) in 2008 yielded hundreds of proposals. Ten artists were selected to take part in the project including a painter, sculptor, artists working with installation and conceptual practices, photographers, a comic book artist, writers, and a performance artist. Each had broad access to the institution’s collections and identified materials (photographs, drawings, paintings, newspaper clippings, sheet music, letters, and city directories among them) that provided points of departure for the creation of new work.
