Project: Character development and design for Kit & Pup TV show
Client: CBeebies (BBC)
Series Producer: Tom Cousins
Animation studio: Sun & Moon
Format: 6 minutes shorts
Kit & Pup is an educational TV show that aims to teach kids the idea of opposites. Each episode is dedicated to a pair of opposite things, like hot and cold, wet and dry, up and down, etc.
The two characters, a cat and a dog, helps kids understand the concepts with a mix of 2D animation, live action and stop motion.
The series consists of 2 seasons of 26 short episodes each.
The first step has been developing a lot of quick ideas in the form of thumbnail sketches.
I explored pairs of characters and then individual animals.
I developed some of them further, with different views, expressions and actions.
First as sketches...
Then testing with colors as well
One important part of the process is testing the characters in action.
The dog went through some revisions, mostly regarding the ears.
Once the decision for cat and dog was taken, I explored different costumes for them, since in the show they were going to change outfit depending on the situation.
One final test was about their ability to change form into different objects. Sometimes in the episodes they take the shape of things, so I tested how they could still be recognizable even when looking like objects.
Thanks for watching!
