The US Opioid Overdose Crisis

The medical director and CEO of GenPsych, PC, Dr. Henry Odunlami oversees more than 300 employees, including over 20 physicians and nurse practitioners. Dr. Henry Odunlami leads an organization that is the largest detoxification entity in New Jersey, with seven locations, including two new facilities in Wayne and Jersey City. GenPsych caters to children, adolescents, and adults, and its programs include treatment for opioid addiction.

Opioids are a class of drugs extracted from opium poppy seeds or manufactured in laboratories that suppress pain, and in high doses cause euphoria. Pharmaceutical companies in the late 1990s assured the medical community prescription opioid pain relievers would not lead to patient addiction to these drugs. As widespread use and misuse of the drugs spread, it became evident that these medications are addictive.

Opioid overdose is now a national crisis. In 2017, around 1.7 million people took prescription opioid pain relievers as part of a substance use disorder. Close to 50,000 individuals in the US died of opioid-involved overdoses in 2019. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the economic burden of prescription opioid abuse alone costs $78.5 billion annually, which includes healthcare costs, addiction treatment, and criminal justice costs.
