Ekhtiar Perso-Arabic Typeface

Ekhtiar Perso-Arabic Typeface

Ta’liq script is a ‘cursive’ Persian calligraphic style, which was gradually developed from the 13th century. This style was widely used, particularly within the Persian speaking lands. However, with the spread of a new Persian style called Nasta’liq, around the 1400, Ta’liq lost its popularity and slowly fell out of use.

I have always been fascinated by the dynamic and richness of this style and wanted to design a digital typeface which could capture those characteristics. I designed this typeface based on the calligraphic model of Khaje Ekhtiar, one of the most celebrated Ta’liq calligraphers and as a tribute to this master calligrapher I called it ‘Ekhtiar’.
This typeface is the result of an extensive investigation in the best calligraphic specimens of Khaje Ekhtiar. My aim was to remain faithful to the original letterforms, and at the same time, develop a typeface that is suitable for modern use.

‘Ekhtiar’ is a calligraphic display typeface and is appropriate for writing headlines or short litrary lines. It supports Arabic, Persian, and Urdu.

This typeface is released by Maryamsoft Company in Tehran, Iran.
