Title Sequences Assignment
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) Alternative Opening Sequence
The first assignment of CC2222 Motion Graphic Design is to create an alternative motion graphic title sequence for a film or television series of the students’ choice. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a movie directed by Tim Burton, released in 2016 based on a book of the same name written by Ransom Riggs is chosen.
The main influences for this opening sequence (apart from the movie itself) are the weekly task that has been given before. For example, the opening starts with a rotoscope of a book, which based on our very first task for CC2222. The ‘slick object transition’ based on Mt. Mograph YouTube video tutorial task was utilized in the transition scene between Miss Peregrine and Barron and finally the ‘Bicycle Animation’ by Easy After Effects YouTube video tutorial task was being utilized for the clock reverse turning scene.

The creation of this alternative title sequence is lightly influenced by the closing sequence of Wonder Woman (2017) a film based on the DC Comics character of the same name, directed by Patty Jenkins.
ALTERNATIVE TITLE SEQUENCE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN PROCESSES
The opening of the title sequence started with the introduction of the director as well as the title of the movie. This pays homage to the original title sequence in which both started with the same introduction.

The font being used are complimentary with the original typeface being used for the actual movie title sequence. The typefaces are explained in the next section.

The design on the title is also based on the original title design, with a few changes apart from the typefaces, which is the usage of ‘birds’ on the design.

To make the title sequence a bit more unique, rotoscope technique was used on the ‘book opening’ scene. To start with this technique, the camera’s settings used were changed to fit with the assignment’s requirements, which are changing the resolution to 1280x720 and the FPS to 25.
The alternative title sequence then carried by the animated rotoscope shot of the book opening which reveals a moving image of Jake Portman standing on the boat, which starring at the sky.

From the movie itself, Jake Portman was staring at a peregrine falcon after his father, Frank Portman, a birdwatcher, told Jake that it was a peregrine.
It then followed by a scene in which Emma Bloom (played by Ella Purnell) was floating while being tied on a rope. This is a scene inspired where Emma would do her daily chores to put the baby squirrel back on the top branch of the tree while being tied onto a rope to prevent her from floating away.
This shot is based on the nature of the character in the film. Miss Peregrine (played by Eva Green) could morph into a peregrine, a species of falcon.
This shot is yet again based on the nature of the character in the film. Barron have the tendencies to suit up, while having a short afro with white eyes as an effect after consuming peculiar’s eyes.
Going back to the plot of the movie, this is again a scene in which a page is being flip to reveal two other characters of the movie. The date written on both photographs are the same day in which the day the place where they are staying at stuck at. It indicated that these photographs are when these 2 members are already part of the loop.
Millard (played by Cameron King) is a character that turned invisible as he ages, until he got fully invisible and start to live with Miss Peregrine. The scene in the alternative title sequence shows a few seconds that shows the head and hands alternating it with being fully invisible. This is to show the viewer that the photograph is not just a photograph of floating head with some clothes place beneath it, but in fact there is a person wearing those.
Olive (played by Lauren McCrostie) is another ‘children’ being covered in the opening sequence. Olive is a character that has the special ability to generate fire through on her hands, which forces her to always must wear leather ‘fire-proof’ gloves.
As far as this scene, there are just three children being featured in the alternative title sequence. The reason for this is that it was just those three that went to rescue Jake Portman when he ran back to the town after first meeting them and went to their hotel thinking that he was still in his timeline, which turned out to have been brought to 1940.
The next shot is of a wall clock turning the opposite direction. This tells the viewer that the movie involves time travelling. This scene combined with the next scene are an actual scene taken from the movie.
This scene is when Miss Peregrine showing how looping the day work, in which she loops the day basically a day before the whole home is being destroyed by an atomic bomb during the world war at that time.
It then followed by the bomb moving back to the sky revealing (in this project’s case) the student and the project’s details. Which if it were to be part of the actual movie, it would reveal shot of beach just like in the movie.
