Stalemate Stories is a work inspired by the stalemate of life. The human race constantly finds itself stuck in a cyclical routine determined by careers, habits and people and lets itself become stuck. The series I have created parallels this cycle by providing the viewer with perspective on a cyclical event.
The stalemate in the game of chess is the point at which the game essentially goes into purgatory, neither player is able to make another move yet neither player loses. With Stories I have championed this outcome as the story of the cycle of life by showcasing the self in a never ending battle with the obstacle. This comes to be represented by each of the six chess men of the opposing color respectively standing for self versus self, love, peers, nature, superiors and technology. I feel that these works speak to the human cycle and to the inability to outright win or lose at the game of life. These games are constantly beginning and ending in a state of purgatory, the challenge of life unwinnable but not unavoidable.
