The American Cancer Society is a nationwide health organization whose mission is to find ways of eliminating cancer, which is a major national challenge. With local and regional offices across the country, the American Cancer Society engages in various partnership programs such as the Coaches vs. Cancer program. For more than two decades, the Coaches vs. Cancer program, in partnership with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), has brought together coaches and fans across the nation to help the American Cancer Society fight cancer.

The program traces its origins to Norm Stewart, the former head coach of the University of Missouri’s men’s basketball program, who was also a cancer survivor and member of NABC. He challenged fans to pledge a donation for each 3-point shot that his team made during the season. It was from this first step that the Coaches vs. Cancer concept evolved. To date, the program has utilized fundraising and education initiatives to help the American Cancer Society in its quest to reduce cancer-related deaths both in the US and across the world.
