20 Powerful Women – International Women’s Day

Every year, for the International Women's day - March 8, I have a tradition of posting illustration dedicated to many brave women from around the world. In the past years there were 91 illustrations dedicated to all female recipients of Yugoslavian "The order of the People's Hero", also portraits of female combatants from Spanish Civil War.

This year I decided to publish illustrations of 20 fierce female activists. They have been clearing the path for every women out there and represent an everyday inspiration. Unfortunately, some of them still are facing prison sentences and prosecutions. Their work should be our example and inspiration of how to build a better future for everyone

Rosa Luxemburg ,5 March 1871 – 15 January 1919/ was a Polish Marxist, philosopher, economist, anti-war activist and revolutionary socialist

Harriet Tubman /March 1822 – March 10, 1913/ was an American abolitionist and political activist. Tubman was an activist in the movement for women's suffrage.

Dolores Ibárruri /9 December 1895 – 12 November 1989/, known as la Pasionaria was a Spanish Republican fighter of the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 and a communist politician known for her famous slogan ¡No Pasarán!

Frida Kahlo /6 July 1907 – 13 July 1954/ was a Mexican painter, communist, activist.

Simone de Beauvoir /9 January 1908 – 14 April 1986/ was a French writer, intellectual, existentialist philosopher, political activist, feminist, and social theorist.

Hannah Arendt /14 October 1906 – 4 December 1975/ was a German-born American political theorist. Her many books and articles have had a lasting influence on political theory and philosophy. Arendt is widely considered one of the most important political thinkers of the 20th century.

Remedios Varo /16 December 1908 – 8 October 1963/ was a Spanish surrealist , activist.

Indira Gandhi /19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984/ was an Indian politician and a central figure of the Indian National Congress. She was the first and, to date, only female Prime Minister of India.

Angela Yvonne Davis /born January 26, 1944/ is an American political activist, philosopher, academic and author.

Mira Furlan /7 September 1955 – 20 January 2021/ was a Yugoslav /Croatian/ actress, activist and a great fighter against nationalism and the war in Yugoslavia.

Virginia Woolf /25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941/ was an English writer, considered one of the most important modernist 20th century authors.

Rosa Parks /February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005/ was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has called her "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".

Ruth Bader Ginsburg /March 15, 1933 – September 18, 2020/ was an American lawyer and jurist Ginsburg spent much of her legal career as an advocate for gender equality and women's rights, winning many arguments before the Supreme Court.
