ART230 | Project 03
Project 03 challenged us to create a poster advertising a typeface for Fonts.com. I began by researching my typeface, Bodoni MT Std. I learned the designer, Giamattista Bodoni, was a professional printer. The typeface first came out in the late eighteenth century and has been revised many times. Bodoni was inspired by designers such as John Baskerville, Pierre Simon and Firmin Didot. Bodoni has five different characteristics which set it apart from other typefaces. The first characteristic would be the high and abrupt contrast between thick and thin strokes. Secondly, would be the long and thin unbracketed serifs. Next, would be the completely vertical axis and horizontal stress. These two features help create geometrical balance. The last characteristic would be the small aperture. Bodoni’s typeface was called a classical design when it first appeared because of the rational structure. Next, it became known as a modern serif font. Today the later designs of the typeface are called modern and the earlier designs of are now called transitional. After my research was over, I began by sketching some rough thumbnails followed by creating digital sketches in black and white. After narrowing the posters down to just three I added color to my designs. Finally after some peer feedback and some further refinement I was able to finalize my poster advertising Bodoni MT Std.
