Ogata Gekkō and his contemporaries

Ogata Gekkō and his contemporaries

Exhibition campaign for Japan Museum SieboldHuis in Leiden, the Netherlands. The animation / gif was designed for social media and was made in Photoshop and InDesign.

The works of Ogata Gekkō will be on display for the first-time outside Japan and will include prints, books, albums and paintings. Contrary to the art of traditional Japanese prints, Gekkō’s style, with its characteristic subtle transitions of colour, bears a closer resemblance to the art of painting. He is famous for his highly developed technical skills and extensive oeuvre, the latter of which include landscapes, females, theatre and prints of the Sino-Japanese war (1894–1895). The exhibition will also include works by a number of Gekkō’s contemporaries such as Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847–1915) and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) and will illustrate both the differences as well as the similarities.
