Somewhere out in the middle of nowhere

SOMEWHERE OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE
Empty and abandoned places throughout the city of Rome.

I created this series of photos for a course at IED (European Institute of Design). I was asked to go and photograph abandoned places throughout Rome in order to document the deterioration of the contemporary urban fabric of the city.

After I was done researching the various abandoned structures in Rome, I went there and worked on defining a story to tell. With my pictures, I wanted to highlight the emptiness and the silence found in those places. Plus, I tried to transform the ugliness of the abandonment into its opposite by showing a peculiar hidden beauty found in the very process of degradation.

Exploring those places was exciting. I had so many questions when walking through an abandoned scenario. What story lies behind the walls of this room? Who lived here? Why did they leave a TV there? When was the last time this house was lived? There will never be clear answers, so the stories of the places will vary depending on our personal imagination.

The project is not yet finished: this is an ongoing work that I shall continue in the following months (perhaps, even throughout the years). I plan to include other locations beside Rome. Other images may show up here in the future.

Here's a video I made with all the photos.
