Packaging and Cover

Two different types of white Japanese paper were used for the packaging, folded in a Japanese envelope
to seal the book. The book itself has a 1.5 mm hardcover, which allows the book to remain light weight yet
protected. The black paper used for the hardcover is textured to maintain an organic feel, since the Japanese
are respectful of the quality of paper they use. The contrast between the white envelope and the black
hardcover maintains an elegant, simple yet striking Japanese aesthetic.

The format of the book is 29.7 x 15 cm. The reason behind choosing such a long slender format is inspired by
Japanese woodblocks. After some observation, I noticed that these woodblocks would be dramatically wide when
portraying a scenery. Or dramatically long when portraying people. And since this book is focusing on people,
I went with the latter format.

Painting texhniques

The paintings were initially inspired from Traditional Japanese ink paintings and specifically Sumi-e painting.
The idea of experimenting with different brush strokes, textures and colors for every painting. To maintain an
organic, authentic apperance to the work.

The challenge however was in finding a way to translate sumi-e's flat 2D drawings, with the idea of drawing every
scene from the prespective of the viewer, which would have to involve a 3D aspect.
