CRAFT BASED DESIGN PROJECT
Craft Studied - Ringal Basketry
Location - Munsiyari, Uttarakhand

As part of the Craft Cluster Initiative by National Institute of Fashion Technology, the students of the Fashion and Lifestyle Accessory Design Department, Semester 5, visited parts of Uttarakhand, to study the various crafts of the region. Our group, consisting of 10 members, got the opportunity to visit the stunning village of Munsiyari, in the Pithoragarh district.
During the course of a week, we visited the craftsmen in a village near Munsiyari called Jaiti and met the maestro of Ringal basketry. We got to know about the day to day goings-on behind the making of the crafts that we only get to see in market places. Moreover, we found out about the daily lives of these artisans and what affects them personally and what is the real story and grit behind the craft and the person making it.

The following project was done individually, and is only a part of the whole project done as a group.
PRODUCT FORM EXPLORATION

The idea behind the new products was to keep in mind the silhouettes that are already practiced by the artisans, and that, no new or unfamiliar material must be introduced. A product that would have the true essence of the craft, in a modernised form.
PAPER MOCKUPS
DIGITAL PROTOTYPES

These models were made using AutoDesk Fusion 360. The weave is indicative only, and not the original look.
