Brainy Guts and Gutsy Brains

There are entire worlds of microbiota (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites,...) inhabiting our gut with population sizes multiple times that of planet Earth.

These microorganisms make use of an immense biochemical complex of hormones, neurotransmitters, bacterial metabolites and many other signaling molecules within our intestines to help function our body to the best of its abilities.

What is more, apart from our central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord), there is a separate nervous system embedded within the lining of our gastrointestinal tract.

If you wish to find out how all of this comes together and, especially, how the gut microbiota impact the functioning of our brain, you're welcome to check out my latest article "Brainy Guts and Gutsy Brains".

Towards the end of the article, I elaborate on one bacterial species (Bacteroides fragilis) and on Parkinson' disease.

Have a great time reading!
