The bachelor graduation project includes different important aspects to develop – urban planning, historical heritage and architectural appearance. The particular context of the city of Thionville represents multiple difficulties concerning its attractiveness and urban development. Taking advantage of the border region “ Moselle” , the city offers a high potential in developing new residential areas and cultural activity for trans-border workers in nearby Luxembourg. The chosen site is a deserted urban block in the heart of the historic center. Occupied by military activities, this area includes a historical monument that could accommodate new activities as well as available space to develop workspace and residences for artists in close proximity to the city center.

The main goal is to conceive a cultural center for artists including exhibition galleries, cultural activities, restaurants and cafés as well as private residential houses and their landscape architecture. The project represents an opportunity to create a unique configuration that can compose different public spaces which offer a suitable urban sequence. This detailed work on public space (squares, gardens and passages) helps the definition of the empty space between the different constructions which stands out as the main conception of the project. Organized by an “architectural walk”, the ateliers and exhibition galleries are linked together by “double heights” which offer a better view of the artistic work. The parking problem must be resolved by installing a parking building in the site limits which can offer an attractive entrance by restaurants and cafés on its ground floor.
