Blisters, a common issue facing hikers, result from a mixture of pressure, moisture, and direct friction. As hikers walk, a tight spot in their boots creates a friction pressure point. Over time, this continued pressure leaves the door open for friction that grabs the skin and slides it around. The upper skin layer soon separates from the lower skin layers and leaves space for fluid, thus creating a blister. Moisture, whether caused by rainwater or sweat, makes the skin softer and leaves it more susceptible to the development of blisters.

Fortunately, preventing the issue is relatively easy, but hikers must find boots that properly fit and are broken in before they start walking. Doing so limits the amount of pressure on the foot while still providing the necessary support. Meanwhile, skipping cotton socks or socks that fit poorly ensures the feet stay dry and keeps the socks from wrinkling. Liner socks add further protection by wicking away moisture and serving as an additional layer between hikers’ primary socks and skin. Adding additional protection, like moleskin or tape, to the hot spot limits skin irritation.
