This Rajasthani craft is an elegant expression of traditional metal weaving. Sultana products often follow circular symmetry. They are made of a wrought iron frame (typically 10 gauge or thicker), and wrapped in Brass, GI wire (18 gauge or thinner) or other linear materials, tied using copper thread. They are often used as decoration and lighting.
To start building it, first I made a 1:1 scale drawing of the chosen design on paper. After cutting eight pieces of 10 gauge GI wire to length, I beat it to follow the shape of the frame outline. Circular rings were also cut to join the frame and provide strength.
Wrapping is a laborious job, but the result is worth it. The entire process takes about 3 days to complete. Here's a look at the final product:
After completing the first piece, I began making a second one, this time with more focus on the finer symmetry and overall finish. The design is loosely inspired by the FIFA World Cup Trophy  with a bottleneck top. This piece is unfinished for the moment.
